Join Blackburn People’s Choir
We are a fun, inclusive, non-auditioning a cappella choir based in the heart of Blackburn. We sing everything from folk and world music to pop, powerful protest songs and beautiful harmonies — all without backing tracks or a piano.
Under the leadership of our Musical Director, Jeff Borradaile, we aim high musically while keeping rehearsals joyful, welcoming and full of laughter.
Do I need to be an experienced singer?
Not at all. We’re interested in your potential, not your CV. Our members range from people who haven’t sung since school days to confident, experienced choir singers. Rehearsals are designed to develop your voice, your confidence and your musicianship.
Do I need to read music?
No — although it can help.
Many of our members learn by ear using our rehearsal tracks. Others enjoy reading music. We support both. When we perform, we sing confidently without scores.
I’ve sung in lots of choirs… will rehearsals feel slow?
Definitely not!
Our rehearsals are energetic and purposeful. We focus on creating a rich, blended sound and bringing songs to life emotionally — it’s never just “note-bashing.” Most members say choir night is the highlight of their week.
How much commitment is expected?
Being part of Blackburn People’s Choir is a team effort. Regular attendance helps us maintain high performance standards and strong harmony.
If you miss a rehearsal, we provide learning resources and support to help you catch up — but nothing replaces being in the room!

You arrive at your first rehearsal, looking forward to a good sing. After all, you love singing—that’s why you’re here, right?
The truth is, you might not sing very much at all in those first few weeks.
That can feel frustrating. But it’s worth sticking with it and trusting the process. A cappella singing in four-part harmony is no small thing. I remember feeling as though everyone around me could read music and effortlessly produce these incredible harmonies. I was completely overwhelmed.
But then I realised something important: everyone has felt that way. Everyone has needed support, encouragement and patience.

Because we’re always working on new pieces, the playing field is constantly levelled. You can focus on the new material, feel yourself keeping up, and gain confidence. And then, almost without noticing, everything else starts to feel possible too.
You’ll be supported every step of the way. It begins with the singers around you in your section. Then someone smiles at you across the room, or chats with you in the break. And just like that—you belong. Your journey has begun.
Yes, it’s a challenge. The pace of learning can be quick. But it’s guided with kindness and humour, and you’re never on your own.
Many people join looking to learn something new, to stretch themselves, to step just outside their comfort zone.
And of course… there’s the fellowship. The friendships. The laughter. The joy. But that’s a whole other chapter.
